Catskill Brussel Sprouts Seeds
The sprouts from this dwarf variety have a flavor depth that hybrids just can't match. They become even sweeter after the first frost. These robust plants yield a lot, with 1-1/2 inch sprouts ready in roughly 90 days.

Historians think that the ancient Romans were the first to grow Brussels sprouts, but Belgium really takes the crown for this little veggie. As the name suggests, Brussels sprouts thrived in large numbers around Brussels. Since the 1900s, California growers have been responsible for most of the Brussels sprouts supply in the U.S. The Catskill variety hails from Arkport, New York, where seed expert Arthur White created them back in 1941.

Sowing: To get the best flavor from brussels sprouts, it's best to plant them late in May or early June for a fall harvest since frost enhances their taste. Start by planting Catskill Brussels sprouts seeds about 1/2" deep in the soil; once they reach 6" tall, either transplant them or thin them out to be 2' apart. Make sure to pack the soil around the seed and keep it moist. Make sure to pack the soil around the seed and keep it moist.

Growing: Before you start growing Brussels sprouts, add mulch to help retain moisture in the soil. Be careful when removing weeds so you don’t disturb the plants. If strong winds are a concern, stake the plants for extra support. As the leaves on the stem start to yellow, remove them to allow the sprouts to grow freely. If you notice aphids, get rid of them by spraying them off with a strong stream of water from a hose.

Harvesting: The first sprouts should be ready about four months after you transplant them. Twist them off the stem starting from the bottom; sprouts that are around 1" in diameter tend to be the most tender. To keep harvesting sprouts after frost, hang the whole plant upside down in a cool area; the sprouts will keep maturing for a few more weeks. Catskill sprouts freeze really well.

Seed Saving: Seed heads won’t form until early spring, so you’ll need to overwinter the plant. In colder climates, this means you should dig up the plant and store it, stem and all, in moist sand at about 40 degrees F. Replant it 3-4 weeks before the last spring frost. Let the sprouts that remain on the plant flower, mature, and dry completely on the stem. The seed heads will open once they’re dry and brown, so keep an eye on them to collect the seeds before they drop to the ground. Store Catskill Brussels sprouts seeds in a cool, dry spot for up to five years.
