The vines of this type can reach heights of up to 5 feet and yield super long pods packed with dark green peas. With a high sugar content, these peas maintain their color and sweetness exceptionally well! This variety has won the AAS award and is perfect for planting in either spring or fall.

Mr. Big Pea, which is an English or shelling pea, has only recently made its way into American gardens. Designed to thrive in both size and yield, Mr. Big Pea is currently the largest shelling pea on the market. This variety earned the esteemed AAS award back in 2000.

Sowing: Since peas love cooler weather and don’t handle being transplanted well, you should plant them outside about 4-6 weeks before the last frost or when the average soil temperature hits at least 40 degrees F. If you’re planting later, keep in mind that most peas can’t handle temperatures above 75 degrees F. If it’s your first time planting peas in your soil, remember to coat the seeds with a powder inoculant of beneficial bacteria. Space the peas 2" apart and plant them 2" deep in light soil with plenty of sunlight. For an early spring harvest, you can plant them the same way in the fall. Just a heads up, peas don’t grow well near onions or garlic.

Growing: As the vines start to grow, a trellis can help support their climbing nature; any support that’s 5-6' tall should do the trick, but if you don’t provide one, the vines will just spread out on the ground. Before they start blooming, keep the pea plants moist but not soggy; after they bloom, you can slightly up the watering. Be careful when removing weeds so you don’t disturb the plants; using mulch can help retain moisture and keep weeds at bay.

Harvesting: Shelling peas usually taste best when you pick them right after the pods have filled out, but before they get too big. Don’t forget to remove any pods that are past their prime, as leaving old pods on the vines can stop new ones from forming.

Seed Saving: To save seeds from garden peas, let the pods fully mature on the vine; they’ll turn brown, and you should hear the peas rattling inside when they’re completely dry. You can pick them one by one, or pull the whole plant and hang it upside down in a warm, dry spot to finish drying. After 1-2 weeks of drying, shell the peas. Store the seeds in a cool, dry place for up to three years.
