Purple Plum is a tough annual radish with a purple skin, perfect for your garden. This type will yield medium-sized purple radishes throughout the season - the crisp white interior has a mild spiciness and is rarely pithy! Similar to other radishes, this variety grows rapidly and can be harvested in just 28 days.
A cherished French heirloom known for its vibrant purple hue, Purple Plum was introduced to American gardeners by the Alf Christianson Seed Company back in 1985.
Sow your first batch of radishes directly into rich soil about four weeks ahead of the last expected frost in spring. Plant them in soil that’s been worked deeply, around 1/2" deep and spaced 1" apart; later on, thin them out to 2-3" apart or more if you want bigger radishes. To keep the harvest going, plant a new batch every two weeks. Since most radishes don’t handle heat well, it’s a good idea to skip planting them during the hot midsummer months. For a fall harvest and winter storage, aim to plant them about two months before the first expected frost in the fall.
Radishes thrive in consistently moist soil, especially when you add organic matter like compost. Make sure the soil doesn’t dry out, but be careful not to over water, as that can lead to splitting.
This variety tastes the best when you harvest them at 1-2" in diameter. Purple Plum radishes are mild and sweet, and they won’t turn woody.
