Festuca ovina glauca, widely recognized as Blue Fescue, is a low-growing ornamental grass known for its blue-gray leaves and clump-forming growth pattern. It flourishes in cooler climates and is frequently utilized for its appealing look in gardens and landscapes.

Blue fescue (Festuca glauca) is a small, cool-season grass indigenous to Europe. Valued for its beautiful foliage color, it is resilient in hardiness zones 4-8. As a cool-season grass, fescues exhibit their best appearance during spring and fall. The leaves of this species start as a light blue-silver in early spring, transitioning to a more blue-green hue in summer. In the fall, the foliage takes on a darker mottled green shade. In milder regions, blue fescue can remain evergreen throughout winter, although it may turn brown in more severe winter conditions.

The slender leaves of blue fescue can reach lengths of up to 10 inches and spread outward from the crown, creating a dense clump of very fine-textured foliage. These clumps typically grow to heights of 10-12 inches with a similar width, expanding outward very slowly. Even under snow cover, the foliage tends to stay mostly upright, adding winter interest to the landscape.

During early summer, delicate inflorescences emerge, rising above the foliage to heights of 14-18 inches. The light green flowers, tinged with purple, appear in terminal panicles that eventually fade to a buff color. While these airy flower spikes are not particularly ornamental, the stalks can be trimmed if desired to enhance the plant's appearance. If the flower spikes are not deadheaded, they will develop brown seed heads. This species readily self-sows and has the potential to become weedy.

Blue fescue serves well as a specimen plant or in mass plantings. Additionally, it functions effectively as a filler plant, given that it is less flamboyant than some other ornamental grasses. This grass can be cultivated in beds and borders alongside herbaceous perennials, utilized as an edging plant, placed in rock gardens among stones or boulders, or even incorporated into rain gardens. It is also suitable for use in containers or troughs to add a vertical dimension. Since this is a clumping grass that does not significantly increase in size as it matures, it should be planted closely (8-10 inches apart) when used as ground cover. The blue hue harmonizes beautifully with cool-colored flowers and helps to soften the appearance of brightly colored blooms.

Blue fescue thrives in full sunlight and needs well-drained soil. However, its blue hue does not develop as effectively in partial shade. It may have a short lifespan in wet soils, heavy clay, and regions with high humidity and temperatures.

In early spring, plants should be carefully trimmed back to 3-4 inches to promote new growth, or older brown leaves can be "combed" out. As the clumps mature, the center often becomes congested and may die, so it is advisable to dig and divide the plants every 2-3 years, discarding the centers and replanting the healthier sections. Blue fescue readily self-seeds.

This plant does not face significant issues with insects or diseases and is resistant to salt spray during winter. Additionally, it can tolerate juglone, meaning it is not affected by black walnut toxicity. However, deer and rabbits may feed on the foliage.
