Aloe camperi 'Cornuta' (Horned Nubian Aloe) - Similar to the species, this aloe forms colonies by producing suckers or branches near its base, but it stands out in several ways. While the typical Aloe camperi usually grows to about 2 feet tall, the 'Cornuta' variant is much sturdier and can reach heights of 4 feet or more at the Huntington Botanic Gardens Desert Garden. This cultivar is also unique compared to the species, featuring much thicker leaves that are mostly straight and adorned with white spots, whereas the species has plain green, slender, and slightly arching leaves. Another distinction is the compact, subcapitate inflorescence with large flowers on shorter peduncles that bloom from late winter to spring, while the species typically blooms from mid to late spring in Southern California.
You can plant it in full sun or shade, but it flowers best in full sun and requires little to occasional watering. It should be just as hardy as the species and can tolerate temperatures down to the low 20s F - it has survived several harsh frosts over the years at the Huntington Botanic Gardens. This makes it a fantastic landscape plant that is both durable and very eye-catching when in full bloom.
