Originating from the dry, rocky soils of central US and Canada, this evergreen herbaceous perennial goes by several names like beargrass, Great Plains yucca, narrowleaf yucca, and Spanish bayonet. It's part of the asparagus family, Asparagaceae, which also includes agave, scilla, and lily of the valley. The plant grows from a deep taproot and develops a large rosette of gray-green to blue-green leaves that are about half an inch wide and 12-18 inches long, featuring sharp pointed tips and pale gray-green edges with threads. In the summer, it produces waxy, bell-shaped flowers on slender racemes that can reach up to 3 feet long. These pendant flowers are around 2 inches long, fragrant, greenish-white with a hint of red, and attract butterflies. Since these plants don’t bloom every year, it’s best to plant them in clusters, although their foliage is quite ornamental. Soapwort makes a bold architectural statement in garden borders and offers food, cover, and nesting spots for wildlife. It's highly drought-resistant, making it a great option for desert gardens or xeriscapes. Native Americans used the peeled roots to create soap for washing clothes and blankets, which is how the plant got its common name. The genus name, Yucca, comes from the Carib word for manihot or cassava, which are unrelated plants.
