Aloe vanbalenii, commonly known as Van Balen’s or octopus aloe, is a type of succulent perennial plant that belongs to the Asphodelaceae family. This plant is native to South Africa and thrives in rocky soils. You can find Aloe vanbalenii growing both alone and in large groups when it matures. It can reach heights of 2 to 3 feet and widths of 3 to 4 feet. The leaves of A. vanbalenii are long and curl inward at the tips, displaying a red to green color depending on how much sun they get. Each leaf is edged with fleshy red spines that emit a cinnamon scent when they get damaged. A. vanbalenii flowers during the winter to early spring, producing thin conical racemes filled with tiny yellow to orange flowers that attract various beneficial pollinators. This species is popular as an ornamental plant due to its drought resistance and unique leaf shape. Aloe vanbalenii thrives in well-draining, organic-rich soil and prefers full sun to partial shade. Make sure to water it well in the summer and less during the winter, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It’s suitable for USDA plant hardiness zones 9a to 11b.

When it comes to germinating Aloe vanbalenii seeds, they need consistent moisture and humidity, but the soil shouldn’t be soaking wet. Using cloning boxes, ziplock bags, or other containers that keep humidity is perfect for storing sown pots. Opt for a well-draining sterilized soil mix. Sow the seeds directly on top of the potting mix and lightly cover them with a thin layer of sand or potting mix, just enough to hide the seeds. Keep the germinating pots indoors, away from extreme light and heat. The ideal temperature for germination is between 75°F and 85°F. Germination usually takes about 2 to 5 weeks, but even under the best conditions, it can be slow and inconsistent.

Sowing Requirements: There's no need for any pre-treatment. Just plant the seeds in a well-draining medium like perlite or pumice gravel. Lightly cover the bigger seeds and leave the smaller ones on top.

Growing Conditions: It loves dry, subtropical weather and does really well in hardiness zone 10.
